This Academy is designed to equip school leaders – Superintendents, School Business Managers, Facility Directors and Principals – with the knowledge and skills to understand, design and implement a sustainable learning environment in their school districts. Building systems, energy efficiency, renewable energy systems and the legal implications associated with such operational decisions will be discussed along with their impact on the learning environment and student wellness. A feature of this Academy will be a tour of West Aurora School District 129’s on-site solar, geothermal fields, and transportation department to see electric busses and their charging stations.
This full-day Academy will focus on the following sustainability topics:
· A review of current incentives and procurement models for on-site solar
· A review of community-based solar programs
· The use of geothermal systems for increased energy efficiency and cost savings
· Internal lighting projects to enhance student learning environments
· The use of electricity to run a transportation department
· Incorporating sustainability into curriculum
